How should students prepare for ISC courses?

Students have the full responsibility to prepare for their selected course materials. Please refer to the course syllabus in our ISC Course website to prepare for class materials before arrival. If Professors use course readers for their classes, students may purchase the course reader in Korea University's Copy Mart upon arrival. If Professors use textbooks for their courses, students are responsible to purchase the requested textbooks before their arrival on campus. Students may contact the Professors directly regarding additional course materials needed for the ISC courses.

Registration- When do I apply?

You should apply as far in advance as possible. This will also allow you to have enough time to make the necessary arrangements to arrive and study. (e.g. visas and housing) Normally the online application form is available from either at the beginning of January or in the middle of January.

What kinds of tuition discounts are available?

If you submit the online application form and send us the non-refundable application fee of KRW100,000 by February 28th, you are eligible to receive a KRW100,000 tuition discount. Please check the "News & Notice" board for more information

Can I pay my registration and course fees in installments?

Yes, students can make two installments for fees – first for the application fee and then for the rest. (Tuition fee plus other optional fees)

How do I add a course after I submit the online registration form?

You have to log in with your registration ID (students receive an automated email regarding their registration information if they successfully complete application form) and password and change the information on course pre-registration menu. You can change/edit/cancel courses before the May 25st 2010 deadline. Also, there is a one or two day period after classes begin to change your course schedule.

Academic Performance - What are the academic expectations for students?

Students are expected to be familiar with the course and website. You can download course syllabus from ISC program -> Courses menu. Given the short length of time, students are advised to preview the course information on the ISC website prior to arrival in Korea University.
Students are expected to attend class everyday as “Class Participation” is a part of our grading policy.
Students must also complete a high volume of reading and homework assignments.
Please note that this is a semester (12 weeks) condensed into 6 weeks. One class workload will be equivalent to what you will learn in a week in the normal semester and you will not succeed if you miss classes and try to cram right before final exams.

How many courses can you take?

You can freely choose to take either 1, 2 or all 3 courses for the ISC program.

In the past, it has been the case that students wanted to experience KU to the fullest extent and therefore, took mostly 3 courses.
However, it is up to the students' interest in taking up to three courses (9 credits obtainable) as ISC has a fixed amount for tuition, meaning the tuition remains the same regardless of the number of subjects you take.

How can I transfer credits to my home institution?

You are allowed to transfer credits from KU automatically to your home institution if there is an official exchange contract between these two schools. Credit applicability is determined by the home institution in the case that KU and your home institution do not have an exchange agreement. This is the responsibility of students to inquire their college/university about the necessary process. Please refer to ISC programs -> Grading for more details.

How do I obtain an official transcript?

You can log into our INTRANET with your ID (your student ID number) and password. Fill in the detailed address for academic record and the OIA will send your transcript via airmail. Write addresses to which you wish your transcript to be sent in the address boxes on the intranet by clicking “modify info” before the end of the program.

How do I know which level of Korean Language Courses to apply for?

Korean Language proficiency tests are given on the first day of class, June 29th 2010.
Registered students will be notified of the test results on the notice board.

Is there any assistance available for International Students?

The OIA opens its students learning center in the WOODANG HALL building where all the classes take place during the summer.
Students will be able to ask for help in writing essay and proof-reading while they are studying for six weeks at International Summer Campus.

Billing and Refund- When is the payment deadline?

The payment deadline is June 2, 2010. Please pay all fees (both tuition and miscellaneous) by this date.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Students who withdraw before the start of the program are charged a KRW100,000 cancellation fee and are refunded the remaining tuition and housing fees (minus the non-refundable application fee). If a student withdraws during the first week of classes, only 80% of tuition and dormitory fees will be refunded. After the first week, under no circumstances can a refund be given. Refunds are issued to bank accounts or credit card accounts (if payment was made by credit card).

How do I know whether my payment went through?

If you log into your application, scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will be able to view your Payment History.

What happens if I have overpaid for the fee?

The OIA will be in touch with you by email to return any overpaid fees.

Arriving and Staying in Korea - How do I apply for a summer student visa for foreigners?

It is the responsibility of the student to use his/her official letter of acceptance to obtain a 90-day student visa (C-3) at the Korean Embassy or Consulate. Please refer to the Student Life section for more details.

Does Korea University’s Office of International Affairs provide airport pick-up service?

Korea University will provide a one-way pick-up service from the Incheon International Airport to the CJ International House for a fee of KRW90,000.

What if I arrive late for my program?

All students are expected to be present for the first day of class given the intensity and short length of our program.
You should make every effort to arrive on time. If you cannot arrive for the first day of class you should notify your professors asking for permission to your late arrival. The professors’ contact information will be on their syllabi.

What types of Scholarship am I eligible for?

There are four types of scholarships:

The Academic Excellence Award of KRW1,000,000 is presented to students who receive all A’s in three courses. Exchange students are not eligible for this scholarship.

The Alumni Scholarship of KRW400,000 will be given to children and grandchildren of Korea University alumni.

For those who are eligible for both scholarships, only one will be given.

The U21/APRU Fellowship Fund
This scholarship is offered to students who are from U21 or APRU member universities around the world.
Students from Europe or North America are given KRW400,000 and Asian students are given KRW200,000.

Both International and Exchange students are eligible for this scholarship.

What kinds of extracurricular programs are available at KU-ISC?

There are numerous opportunities for you to experience and enjoy activities. Diverse cultural workshops in dance, calligraphy and music are available. KU ISC also offers weekly field trips for students to venture into modern and traditional Korea. Please refer to the Student Life section for more details.

Are meals included in the housing fee?

A Meal Plan is not included in the housing fee. There is a cafeteria running from Monday to Friday until 10AM where you can buy continental breakfast. There is an array of mini-restaurants and bars on and off campus where students can buy meals ranging from KRW3,000 to KRW10,000.
